Лауреат премии Кошута, офицер Ордена литературы и искусства. Член Баварской Академии изящных искусств в Мюнхене, Художественной Академии в Берлине, почетный профессор Королевской консерватории в Гааге. Награжден Премией принца Монакского, премией Австрийского государства, премией Эрнста Сименса, премией Гёльдерлина, Премией Леони Соннинг, Премией Гравемайера. Почётный гражданин Республики Австрия.
